Guide – How To Start – GitLab – Team Collaboration Server on Ubuntu 18.04 on Amazon

  1. For the correct work of the virtual machine, the VM RAM must be at least 4 GB.
  1. For the VM to work, you need to open port 80 (TCP), in the network properties in Amazon Firefall.          

Connect to the virtual machine with <PuTTy>

  1. Install PuTTY Link to download the application – https://putty.org.ru/download.html. Start PuTTY.
  1. To connect to a virtual machine, you need to generate a “private key” in advance. This can be done using the following instructions (by choosing the “file format:” option “.ppk” in step 3)

  1. Go to the SSH section on the left pane, and then to Auth.
  1. In the Auth section, click <Browse> and specify the path to the .ppk file that was generated earlier.
  2. Go to the Sessions section, enter the IP address of the virtual machine and click <Open>.


7. In the window that appears, click <Accept>.

8. In the console that opens, you must enter the standard login that appears when creating a virtual machine – ubuntu.

 Or use the User name that was specified after the VM was created.

9. Now you need to restart the portal. To do this, enter the following command:

  sudo gitlab-ctl reconfigure Press <Enter>. Wait a couple of seconds


10. Now you can move on  to your <DNS-name> specified in the configuration file via <PuTTy>
11. If an error occurs during the transition (screenshot below), try again in a couple of minutes.


12. In order to go to the GitLab site, you need to enter into the browser http://ip:80, or through Public DNS, which is specified in the properties of the virtual machine.

13. When you first visit the site, you will be prompted to create a new password for the <root> account. In the <New Password> field, enter the password, in the <Confirm Password> – confirm the password. Use your Instance-ID as a password.


14. Now you can login. To do this, enter “root” as the username and password that you specified in the previous step. Click <Sign in>


15. Done, you can manage your projects, when the main page opens.
