How to create and connect to Alien Swarm for Windows 2016
- Before turning on the server, you must specify the external IP address of the virtual machine in the startup parameters. To do this, open the “start server.bat” file for editing, and replace the -ip value with the VM’s IP address.
- After setting up the “start server.bat” file, run “server start.bat” from the desktop.
- To connect to the server, start the “Alien Swarm” game on your PC, open the console with the “~” key on your keyboard, write connect %vm_adress% and press “Enter” to connect. For example: connect 127.0.0.1
- To start the game, you need at least one player. First, choose a “Tech” character to play. Then add the bot using the cl_selectm {marine} {slot} command and start the game.
Where:
{marine} is a number from 0 – 7 as per following:
0 Sarge
1 Wildcat
2 Faith
3 Crash
4 Jaeger
5 Wolfe
6 Bastille
7 Vegas
{slot} is either a number from 0 to 3 that corresponds to a slot in the list of players, or -1 for the next available empty slot.
Server update
If you were unable to connect to the server you should update the server. To do this, connect to the VM through RDP and do the following:
- Shutdown the server (type exit in server console)
- Go to the “C:\steamcmd” folder and open the “steamcmd” file
- Enter the following commands in sequence:
> login anonymous
> force_install_dir “C:\alien”
> app_update 635 validate
Wait until the server is updated, and run “start server.bat” file from the desktop again.
